"Rawr!" Lionpaw roared as they came to the training hollow. "That's my battle cry. I'll be the toughest warrior ever! And I'll be the coolest hunter too! Like, mice will come to me because they'll know they don't stand a chance! I can't wait! Oh, what's first? Am I going to climb a really high tree? Kill a badger? Spy on Shadow Clan? Whatwhatwhat?" She was really hyper and ready even though it was really early. She had been looking forward to training for a long time. And who better to train her than Silverfoot?

Silverfoot smiled. "Of course you'll be the toughest warrior!" she said truthfully. Silverfoot hoped and believed it with all her heart. The silver tabby she-cat sat down and turned her serious green gaze upon the apprentice. "Let's get started. The first move I'm going to teach you is a battle move. It's called the belly rake, said Silverfoot. "To perform a belly rake, you rake your unsheathed claws down your opponent's belly. We'll practice with claws sheathed, though," Silverfoot said quickly. "I think a lot of apprentices get pinned down by their larger opponents, and that's when you use this move."

"Okay!" Lionpaw cried happily. Then she got serious. "I guess I'd be on my back, right? And my opponent is on top of me, so I scratch his stomach with my claws. I mean, not now anyway, but that's how it works?" She looked at Silverfoot's green eyes. She wanted to make sure she understood everything.

"Yes, exactly! Do you want to give it a try?" Silverfoot asked. Without waiting for an answer, she got to her feet. "Try to fight me off in anyway you can. Keep your claws sheathed, though," she said. Silverfoot leaped toward Lionpaw, and waited for her to make the first move, not wanting to ruin her confidence by attacking with everything she had.

Lionpaw watched as Silverfoot leaped toward her. Her paws twitched. What should I do? she thought. I won't have time to think in a real battle, she realized with a sinking feeling. So she ran around Silverfoot and jumped on her back. This is a start, I suppose, she thought sadly.

"Good thinking, Lionpaw, you're doing great," said Silverfoot. Silverfoot twisted and turned to try and break the apprentice's grip. She wanted to pin her down so Lionpaw could try out the belly-rake before they started talking about another move. She's a natural fighter, Silverfoot realized happily. I wonder if she'll be as good at hunting, Silverfoot thought, and then decided that she wouldn't blame the apprentice because Silverfoot herself had always had trouble with hunting.

Lionpaw held on tight as the she-cat tried to pin her down. She knew she wasn't as stong as Silverfoot, so she wasn't surprised when she found herself under her mentor and on her back. Okay belly rake... Lionpaw remembered to keep her claws in but she still put some strength into her paws as she moved them down Silverfoot's stomach and pushed up a bit.

Silverfoot felt her apprentice push her up and, being slightly surprised, had to twist to land on her feet. She sat down and licked one paw. "Wow, Lionpaw! That would have ended the fight right there, had I been an enemy warrior and you used your claws," said Silverfoot. She was very proud of her apprentice. "Do you want to try another battle move, or do you want to try hunting now?" Silverfoot asked. That had been what her mentor had always done- let her choose what to practice. I hope I'm doing okay as a mentor, Silverfoot thought anxiously.

Lionpaw smiled when her mentor complimented her. "Let's do another battle move!" Lionpaw rubbed her nose in Silverfoot's side. "You're the best mentor ever!" She giggled. She had expected training to be horrible, but with Silverfoot as her mentor, it wasn't as bad as she'd imagined it. She couldn't wait to learn everything from Silverfoot. "This is fun!"

Silverfoot purred and placed her tail on her apprentice's shoulder. "Alright. How about the leap and hold? That's a hard one to get the hang of, so don't worry if you don't get it right away," the silver tabby mewed. "To do that one, leap up onto your enemy's back, and stay there as long as you can," Silverfoot said, trying to remember everything about the move. "Oh, and look out for the roll. If you feel the cat starting to roll, jump off as quickly as you can."

"Okay," Lionpaw said. "Leap and hold. Got it." Then Lionpaw jumped onto Silverfoot's back. "This is fun!" she laughed. All I have to remember is that when she starts rolling, I jump off. That's not so hard. Lionpaw gripped tightly with her paws to Silverfoot and waited for her mentor to 'attack'.

Silverfoot smiled, and she began to roll, trying to time it so that if her apprentice didn't make the jump the first time, Silverfoot wouldn't crush her. The silver tabby warrior rolled slowly the first time, to give Lionpaw a chance. I'll have plenty of time to make it harder for her, Silverfoot decided.

Lionpaw jumped in the direction opposite the one Silverfoot was rolling in. She landed gently and giggled. "Roll faster!" she laughed. "You're not that old, are you?" Lionpaw waited for her mentor to get up. "Faster, please," she repeated politely. "I was imagining that you were a big WindClan cat. But you were rolling so slowly, you started to look like a grouchy old elder!"

Silverfoot got to her paws and shook off her coat, which was covered in dust. The silver warrior gently licked her apprentice on the head, thinking, I should have known better. "Sorry about that, do you want to try it again?" she asked Lionpaw. While the ThunderClan warrior awaited the she-cat's response, she licked her paw and drew it over her ear.

Lionpaw had a bad feeling that she had somehow offended her mentor. She nuzzled her side with her forehead. "I didn't mean to offend you, Silverfoot. And, yes, I think I'd like to try it again." She sat down. "And this is fun. I like being your apprentice."
