Speckledpaw padded cautiously through ShadowClan territory. She wasn't usually the type to trespass, but she wanted to know more about ShadowClan. I'm not stealing prey or herbs, nor am I spying. It;s just a learning experience, Speckledpaw thought to herself, but she knew that if a ShadowClan cat caught her, she would be dead meat. I'll leave soon, she decided. At that moment, she heard paw steps. The RiverClan apprentice felt her heart stop. She looked around wildly for a hiding place, and leaped into a juniper bush. Maybe the herbs will hide my scent.

Wolfpaw's mind was strictly on the juniper berriers that his mentor had asked him to fetch as he bounded through the forest with is nose in the air. His eyes and nose were in the air, sniffing out the bright purple berries. He let out a mew of delight has he spotted the spikey leaves. He sniffed around the bush for a moment, starting to gather the berries when something else other than the berries scent hit his nose. Riverclan. Wolfpaw scrambled back from the bush out of striking distance, and crouched down close to the ground. What should he do - attack and drive the cat away or escort it back to it's border. "Come on out, Riverclanner, I know you're there" he demanded, his mew steadier than he thought. Wolfpaw scrapped his claws across the ground. Being a medicine cat apprentice, Wolfpaw didn't get much training on fighting so he was sure the cat in the bushes could probably kill him. His mind flinched away from the thought - maybe Wolfpaw shouldn't have refused a warriors escort.

Speckledpaw's muscles tensed. What should she do? Run before he realized who she was? Or just try to talk it out? She decided to come out, and at least apologize. It's the right thing to do, the RiverClan apprentice decided. Speckledpaw stepped out of the bushes and looked at Wolfpaw. "I'm sorry, I wasn't stealing prey or spying or anything, I was just trying to learn more about ShadowClan," she explained, knowing it wasn't enough, and swallowed uncomfortably. She recognized this cat- he was Wolfpaw, the ShadowClan medicine cat apprentice.

Wolfpaw was suprised that the cat actually had listened to him. Relief trickled through his joints when he realized it was an apprentice just like him. She could probably still kill me if she wanted to, Wolfpaw reminded himself. His golden gaze swept over her, taking in ever detail. He was almost certian he'd seen this she-cat before, but he didn't know from where. Wolfpaw narrowed his eyes. "You just wanted to learn more about Shadowclan?" he repeated doubtfully. Taking a few hesitant steps forward, Wolfpaw's sharp nose didn't detect any prey scent coming from her, which meant she probably wasn't lying about not stealing prey. "Don't your queens and elders make up enough stories aobut us?" Wolfpaw's normally gentle mew sharpened with anger. He hated the lies the queens told their kits more than most cats, because he knew they weren't all true and stretched that far.

Speckledpaw's ears flattened as his tone sharpened. She looked around her and sat down hesitantly, muscles ready for a fast retreat. Finally, she turned her gaze back to Wolfpaw. "Yes, I wanted to know more about ShadowClan territory because of the queen's tales. They stretch the truth just to scare the kits so they won't cross the borders. Honestly, I was just looking, to see what it's like here," she mewed, sensible as ever, but trying to keep her voice down so as not to attract attention. Speckledpaw flicked her tail over her paws. "I'm Speckledpaw," she said, instantly regretting it. It didn't seem like her knew my name! Now he'll be able to tell his leader and I'll get in trouble.

Wolfpaw forced his fur to lay flat. At least one cat knew the stories weren't true. "Hello Speckledpaw," he mewed, dipping his head respectfully. "I'm Wolfpaw, but I think you would know that already." He studied her silently. She didn't look like an apprentice who would go around sticking her nose into things that were offlimits. Wolfpaw forced back a strange sense of admiration for the pretty she-cat as he looked over her tortishell and white fur. He, for a moment, wondered what she'd be like if she was a Shadowclan apprentice and not Riverclan. They could have been friends.

Speckledpaw dipped her head back, looking slightly wary, but her fur was flat as well. She pretended to be looking at her paws, but she shot a glance at him out of the corner of her eye. The RiverClan she-cat blinked in surprise as she realized she thought he looked handsome. Speckledpaw shook her head slightly. What's wrong with me? she wondered. Forcing herself to look up, she asked him, "You're the medicine cat apprentice, right? That must be fun."

Wolfpaw felt her gaze on him and his fur prickled. Why did she have to keep looking at him like that? he thought frustrated, feeling his pelt burn with embarrassment. Distracting himself, Wolfpaw scratched at the dirt. "It can be..." he murmered quietly, adding silently to himself that he missed some of the things a warrior got. Like... a mate. Wolfpaw flinched. He'd never had that thought before this she-cat tresspassed on his territory.

Speckledpaw's ears flattened again, sensing that she'd done or said something wrong. She curled her tail around her paws and watched a beetle crawl along the ground. Resisting the urge to bat at it, Speckledpaw rolled the muscles in her shoulders, something she did unconsciously when she was uncomfortable. The RiverClan apprentice licked one paw and looked up at the sky. I hope no one notices I'm gone, she thought worriedly.

Wolfpaw watched her silently, unwanted emotions raging inside him. An amused purr managed to escape his throat when he saw her roll her shoulder muscles. "How long had you been away from camp?" he asked hesitantly. Something told him to leave the she-cat before he got too attached, but then another part didn't want to leave Speckledpaw here. Not alone. He'd walk her back to her border later.

Speckledpaw looked over at him. "Not long," she replied. She knew she should go, but somehow she didn't want to. Her tail flicked again, and she looked down at her paws again. Why am I attracted to him? It's wrong on so many levels. First, he's from a different Clan. Second, he's a medicine cat apprentice! What's wrong with me? There are plenty of toms in RiverClan, she thought, but Speckledpaw knew she couldn't stop these feelings.

Wolfpaw nodded slowly. It didn't seem like she had been, he thought. "You must be hungry," he meowed looking around for prey. Mildly wondering how often Riverclan cats hunted in a forest, he dropped down into a crouch after spotting a frog a few paces away. He sprang on top of it and killed it with a swift bite. He might be a medicine cat apprentice, but he was still a pretty good hunter. Padding back over to Duskpaw, Wolfpaw was careful not to look into her eyes, afraid of what might happen if he did. "Here," he muttered around a mouthful of frog. He went to pass it over to her, his muzzle rushing hers and his heart pounded in his chest, making his whole body quiver. Wolfpaw prayed to Starclan none of the other Shadowclan cats would see him helping the pretty Riverclan apprentice.

Speckledpaw's eyes widened when Wolfpaw brushed her muzzle. She quickly blinked to cover her surprise, and mewed, "Thank you." The RiverClan she-cat studied the frog. She had never had one before, but who was she to judge it? She carefully took a bite. It's not so bad. It tastes a little like fish, she thought, and gently pushed it over to him. "Do you want some?" she asked, figuring it was the polite thing to do.

After his heartbeat slowed, he settled down into a comfortable crouch. He kept his eyes and ears and nose open for any other cats that might walk in on them. Hearing her question, Wolfpaw shook his head. "I already ate before I came out." Purring with amusment, Wolfpaw watched as she hesitantly took a bite of the frog. "You peel the skin back first," he told her gently, chewing back the skin for her.

Speckledpaw's ears flicked in embarrassment, but she just mewed, "Oh. Thanks, Wolfpaw," and took another bite. Her ears were pricked for the sound of any other cats, but she did not hear anything. Speckledpaw finished the frog and sat up, swiping her tongue around her muzzle. Speckledpaw wondered what wold have happened to her if it hadn't been Wolfpaw who had found her. Bad things, Speckledpaw's mind answered for her.
